Happy Anniversary Sailor Moon!

HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY SAILOR MOON!

So a few months ago a Sailor Moon reboot by Toei was announced, to not only celebrate the 20th anniversary, but also probably because everyone wants to see a more faithful adaption of the comic _{(to be fair though, some of the changes in the 90's cartoon do have good reasoning behind them, while the changes in PGSM were there so that it would have something new to offer)}

Me being a huge Sailor Moon fan, I just had to join the bandwagon of celebrating both the anniversary and the reboot by making some fanart

_{So in this picture, as you can see, we have the most important characters from PSSM and PGSM (but no Sera Myu characters, mainly because I haven't seen them, but also because as far as I know, Sera Myu is kind of based on PSSM?)
__Let's start with our Sailor Moons. In the bottom left we have Classic Sailor Moon from PSSM and on the right Guardian Sailor Moon from PGSM. In the top left we have Eternal Sailor Moon and next to her Princess Sailor Moon.
__Why so many Sailor Moons? Well when making this picture I wasn't sure which versions I should go with- the very first versions or the "ultimate" ones. I did know that in PGSM there was only two different Sailor Moons so I knew I wasn't going to draw Super Sailor Moon, but still it didn't help much. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I wanted to show how different both PSSM and PGSM were, from start to finish, so it gave me the idea to draw the "weak" and the "ultimate" Sailor Moons next to each other, to show that while they were similiar in the begining, they "ended" up very different (watch PGSM to know what I mean, if you don't get it).
__I'd love to note that there's a high chance of the PGSM Moons' fukus having mistakes in them. This is mainly because it was really, really hard to get any good reference pictures. I mean I went through hell to find some reference pictures and they often had really bad quality. I even used Naoko Takeuchi's chibi picture of Princess Sailor Moon as reference, but the sad thing was that even it wasn't really accurate, since some details got changes in the show itself. So yeah, there are some mistakes in the PGSM clothes, but it's because references were hard to get.
__Also unfortunately that applies to both Tuxedo Masks, and the PGSM Inners. And Eternal Tiare (or whatever the staff Eternal Sailor Moon has here is called)
__Then we have our Tuxedo Masks. These two were so similiar that I ended up being a cheating bastard and copy&pasted some of the lineart from one to other (it was mainly just the pants/shoes/cape/part) Unfortunately you can't see PSSM's Tuxedo Mask's shirt, since the main differences with the Tuxedo Masks were the shirts (and hair, and some minor details).
__Now let's move to PSSM Inners. As you can see these are the Super Inners (while I would love to say "from Sailor Stars", fact is that they were in their super forms already in SuperS, so yeah) performing the most powerful attacks they had in the cartoon; Mercury Aqua Rhapsody, Mars Flame Sniper, Jupiter Oak Evolution and Venus Love and Beauty Shock. Yup, their poses are from the attacks. Light source and background are different though.
__After sketching the PSSM Inners I had to move to the PGSM Inners. Of course by then I had decided to draw them using their most powerful attacks from the end of the series, but then it hit me- not only did the PSSM Inners have more attacks than the Inners in PSSM had in the 5 seasons, but I also wasn't sure which of them "were the most powerful". Also they used their many attacks many times so there was no "last attacks they got".
__Then I got an idea- in the "final battle" the Inners called their planets to help them and got those weapons (also their "poses" kind of reference to it)! It's the one thing PSSM didn't have at all, so it should be a great idea (apart from, you know, hard to get references). Then I remembered Venus. For those who haven't seen PGSM (shame on you, go watch it, it is amazing) Venus not only isn't in the final battle, but she shared her weapons with Mars. In a special that takes place after the series, you get to see Venus use those daggers (since Mars isn't there this time), the colors were just reversed. So yeah, drawing Venus wouldn't be very interesting. I could've drawn Princess Sailor Venus, but really, she only would've gotten her belt, the crecent on her forehead, and the tiara on her head, and I still would have had to figure out some attack-thing there. Then I remembered that Sailor V was never seen in her V-clothes interacting with the Inners in PSSM, while Sailor V does that quite a bit in PGSM! That's a major difference, and resulted in me drawing Sailor V there (though no attack for her, sadly).
__With the backgrounds for the PGSM Inners I wanted to do something different . I didn't want to draw some blank BG with their planet's symbol just hanging there, so I decided to draw giant crystal planet symbols along side something recognizeable they had in PGSM- Mercury god Dark Mercury's Tiara (and god knows it was hard to draw, though surprisingly enough finding references was easy ._. People love Dark Mercury), Mars got her ball of fire from her attack "Youma Taisan" (mainly because I couldn't think of anything else), Jupiter got some flower petals (again, couldn't think of anything, apart from Motoki...), and V got Crescent Moon Cutter ([link])
__On the center of the picture you have that huge heart with text on it. It is, of course, supposed to be Sailor Moon's classic speech. However the translation was hard to work with, since most of them started with "For love and justice", which just doesn't sound right to me (mainly because fansubbers who translated her speech like that, translated it so that whatever Sailor Moon was saying at the moment, would be in the subs). That lead to me changing the sentence structure a bit so that the translation would be more accurate. So no, the line isn't really wrong, I just changed the sentence structure to make it sound better and to make it more accurate
__And I think I am more or less done with notes. The only things I can say after this are just obvious notes, like "the Sailor Fukus/Hair had different colors/shades/were bigger/smaller". Or that figuring out PGSM character's eye colors was HARD (only eyecolor I got was Mercury's, and that was by dumb luck ._.). Or that while in PGSM you can see Tuxedo Mask's and V's eyes while they wear their masks, I left them out because I couldn't fit them there. Or that Tuxedo Mask doesn't have a pearl on his mask because it was there only in the begining of PGSM and disapeared later on.}


Wow that is a lot of notes. You can be sure that I'm not going to be checking that for typos or grammar errors.
